By bike through the "Altes Land" on the Elbe river

Vacation at the gates of Hamburg

(djd). Last year, traveling within Germany experienced a real boom. In 2021, too, many people have decided to finally discover the most beautiful corners of their own country. A particularly attractive destination lies south of the Elbe between Hamburg and the North Sea: the Alte Land on the Elbe. In addition to fruit growing during the colorful bloom or the delicious harvest time, the holiday region is mainly characterized by its maritime character and the tradition of the Hanseatic League. A detour to the two Hanseatic cities of Stade and Buxtehude is therefore a must. The best way to explore the picturesque area is by bike.

Themed tours and long-distance cycle routes

Cyclists can explore the region on a total of over 1,000 kilometers of uniformly signposted cycle paths and on twelve themed tours. As circular courses from 35 to 65 kilometers in length, they are ideal for exciting day trips. They lead past mills and churches over the beautiful Geest, through the Altes Land orchard and the Hanseatic city of Stade. Enchanted moor landscapes, the Krautsand peninsula in Kehdingen or the fairytale search for traces around the Hanseatic city of Buxtehude are also part of the various themed tours. All information, including about the many sights along the route, is available at www.radeln-altesland.de. A tour planner with a free app at www.tourenplaner-altesland.de also provides convenient support for planning trips. This can be found in the Apple App Store and Google Play. In addition to the themed routes, seven long-distance cycle paths lead through the holiday region, including part of the 1,300-kilometer Elbe cycle path, one of the most popular cycle paths in Germany. The North Sea Cycle Route with a total length of 6,000 kilometers meanders through eight European countries - 50 kilometers of which run through the Alte Land on the Elbe. The 450 kilometer long cycle path "From Teufelsmoor to the Wadden Sea" opens up the region between the Elbe and Weser rivers.

Unique natural spectacle: fruit blossom in spring

For a full three weeks, the largest contiguous fruit-growing area in Northern Europe with over 18 million fruit trees is transformed into a pink-white, wonderfully fragrant sea of flowers. The white cherry blossom usually starts in mid-April and the pink and white apple blossom starts just a few days later. This play of colors can be enjoyed particularly intensely on a bike tour through the countless secluded orchards.
