Hiking in Montenegro

Small country, much space

Between Almen and Adria

(djd). Mountain lovers looking for a largely undiscovered alternative to the Alps will find what they're looking for in Montenegro. In the "Land of Black Mountains", five national parks with biodiverse alpine meadows, hidden lakes, toasting waterfalls and Europe's deepest gorge are spread over an area of just around 14.000 square kilometers. The mountain ranges in the west are closeby to an almost 300 kilometre long coastline. Where Almen and Adriatic meet, for example around the Bay of Kotor, hiking season already begins in April due to the Mediterranean climate.

Enjoy nature and culture the easy way

In spring, the air is clear and provides a wide panoramic view from the hills down to the Adriatic and fjord-like bay, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the fortress city of Kotor since 1979. The "coastal transverse" takes you through this charming area in around eight stages with its important cultural monuments. The long-distance route begins in Herceg Novi in the north and stretches over 182 kilometres to the southern section of the coast to Bar. It is also possible to master the trails as individual daily trips.

Mausoleum and monastery in the mountains

The coastal transversal also leads through Lovcen National Park, where the topography has created spectatular wildlife. Natural and cultural pleasures can also be well combined here. For example, a hike from the visitor centre on the Ivanova Korita High Alpine (accessible by bus from Budva or Bar) leads around 400 metres up to the Mausoleum of Negos, the resting place of prince-bishop and poet Petar II. Petrovic Njegos. However, even less people wander through the central mountains. The Ostrog monastery, which was built spectacularly on a rock wall, can be reached there after a small hike.

Five national parks, the deepest gorge in Europe and an Adriatic coast of almost 300 kilometres - Montenegro unites a wide variety of landscape forms in a comparatively small space. From April onwards, the coastal region characterised by the Mediterranean climate will invite you to a beautiful spring hike and sightseeing tours. Natural and cultural highlights can easily be combined on the far away "coastal transverses". Hikers from Herceg Novi in the north to the southern section can reach the coastal town Bar in around eight stages, each of which can also be completed as individual day trips. In between you can experience the bay of Kotor, a Mediterranean fjord landscape with historic towns that belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
