On the trail of the Romans

Neckar-Alb-Aare Roman Route

A well-developed road network was one of the most important prerequisites for the organisation, administration and supply of the vast Roman Empire to function smoothly. The course of the Neckar-Alb-Aare Roman Road is based on the ancient routes, according to the "Peutingeriana Tabula". This medieval copy of an ancient street map shows many of the places that still show visitors a wide variety of Roman settlements history. Whether castell, village settlement or city – the most important stations in the former province of Obergermania can still be "experienced" along this route over almost 500 kilometres in the truest sense of the word.

The special feature of the Neckar-Alb-Aare Roman Road: As in ancient times, it crosses the borders between the German southwest and Switzerland! From the castle-rich heights of the Swabian Alb, wildly romantic along the Neckar to the lovely valleys of the High Rhine and the Aare, varied landscapes and mature culture delight visitors.

Roman life and ancient culture

Authentic testimonies of Roman life and ancient culture along the Roman Road provide exciting insights into the life of that time. Remnants of the former settlement can be discovered everywhere along the way, be it farms, bathing and heating facilities, forts, water pipes, latrines or museums with countless finds from archaeological excavations. Many of the events on offer are aimed not least at families. For example, history comes alive at Roman festivals, such as those held regularly in Hechingen-Stein, Hüfingen, Brugg and Windisch. Roman legionaries fight against Celts or Alemanni, craftsmen show their skills, bread is baked and swords are forged.

Museums & Theme Tours

At the diverse educational programmes offered by the museums along the route, visitors can, for example, try out ancient working techniques or cooking recipes for themselves or learn about archaeological working methods.

Finally, at the southern endpoint of the Roman Road in the Swiss town of Windisch, interested visitors can explore various aspects of Roman life on the Legionary Trail of the Aargau Museum: various game and theme tours for all age groups invite visitors to discover the world of the Vindonissa legionary camp for themselves. At the end, the budding legionaries can spend the night in true-to-the-original team accommodation.
