Route of Emperors and Kings

There are countless traffic routes in Europe, but hardly any one is both as young and ancient, so steeped in history but contemporary at the same time as the route along or on the Danube, from Regensburg to Budapest. This travel route along the Danube is a piece of European history and tradition. The footsteps of the emperors and kings lead through medieval cities, to monasteries, castles and magnificent residences. Traveling by ship on the venerable Danube is, then as now, the most relaxing way of getting around to travel the road of emperors and kings.

Leisurely travel, not only in the motorhome

Traveling without borders

Previously travel on the water was most common, mainly because the transport on land was very difficult, however it is much easier nowadays. If you did want to experience water travel but sail in comfort, you can do so in style on a Danube ship, for example, or alternatively you could use the numerous offers of the railway along the Danube - for example with the Austrian Radexpress Donau.
Those who prefer to "slow down" in the open air can hike on foot on the Donausteig between Passau and Grein or cycle on the popular Danube Cycle Path, which also begins in Germany and leads to Budapest. Individual cultural trips can also be created and booked.

1
Regensburg
The historic houses, together with cozy street cafes and shops, shape the unique flair of the pulsating old town and, through this combination of historical and modern, give Regensburg the title of Germany's medieval wonder.
2
Passau
Not only do national and international long-distance cycle paths cross in Passau, the city is also one of the arrival and departure points for Danube cruises to the Black Sea.
3
Linz
What sets Linz apart from other cities is its unmistakable character and constant development. Those who remain curious here will spend an unforgettable time on the Danube and experience the change that Linz exudes.
4
Wien
Not only the many buildings from imperial times make Vienna a city full of beauty and art: museums, collections and works of art of world class can be seen here.
5
Bratislava
The names of the Danube metropolis still bear witness to its eventful history: While the Slovaks call their capital Bratislava, the city in Austria is called Pressburg.
6
Budapest
A metropolis of millions, cultural capital and spa capital at the same time, Budapest almost magically casts its spell over visitors. It is not without reason that the Hungarian capital calls itself the “Pearl on the Danube”.

Where once mighty kings and emperors ruled

Whether Bavarian kings or Austrian emperors, they all left their mark on what is now Bavaria, Hungary or Austria. Accordingly, there is a lot to discover on your tour. Every evening you will go to bed in amazement at the great impressions you have gathered and be happy to see which are coming the next day.

The green roof of Europe

East Bavaria

The mighty Bavarian-Bohemian Forest Mountains stretching along the border of Eastern Bavaria is also known as the "Green Roof of Europe". In the west and south, Eastern Bavaria extends to Franconia and Upper Bavaria. The specialties include the glass craft in the Bavarian Forest, the stalactite caves and limestone reefs in the Bavarian Jura, the volcanic cones and the 4,000-lake landscape in the Upper Palatinate Forest as well as the porcelain production.

Regensburg - World Heritage Site

In Regensburg, the Danube becomes a river that unites people. Between Regensburg and Passau you can discover a region rich in cities and monasteries, which was largely shaped by the works of art by the Asam brothers. The eventful history of two millennia has taken shape in stone in Regensburg. St. Peter's Cathedral, the town hall with the Reichssaalbau, museums, monuments and art treasures of European standing - the past comes to life here. In 2006 the city was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bavaria's Venice

Passau

German emperors and kings, the French emperor Napoleon I and the Austrian empresses Maria Theresia and Sisi paid their respects to the three rivers city. One of the biggest city events is the imperial wedding of Leopold I, who sought protection in Passau seven years later in 1683 because of the Turkish siege of Vienna. Passau's backdrop with towers, squares, promenades and alleys was created by Italian baroque masters. In the middle of the old town rises the proud Cathedral of St. Stephen, in which the largest Catholic church organ in the world can be heard. Veste Oberhaus and Mariahilf greet majestically from the heights.

Upper Austria

After Passau, the river breaks through the forest of Upper Austria to East Bavaria, crosses the Linz basin and reaches the Strudengau. The Nibelungenstrasse along the Danube is rightly regarded as one of Austria's dream roads, on which one can experience testimonies of history and the magnificent landscape. Legends and historical realities are closely connected in the Nibelungenlied. This great medieval poem describes the route with such clarity that we can use the epic like a travel guide.

In flux for centuries

Bratislava - The Coronation City

It is the modern Danube metropolis at the intersection of different cultures. Archaeological finds of an extensive Celtic settlement as well as a Roman fort prove the important trade routes on the Danube and are of strategic importance as part of the Limes Romanus. From 1536 to 1783 it was the capital of Hungary because the Turks were in Budapest. Ten Hungarian-Austrian kings were crowned in St. Martin's Cathedral in Bratislava, including Maria Theresa (1741). The touch of bygone centuries can be felt on a tour of the renovated old town and trendy cafés and restaurants beckon everywhere.
