The mining region is a living and tangible world heritage site. Nowhere else in Germany are there so many mining sites, fascinating mining towns, imposing sacred buildings, visitor mines and works of art with a mining connection as in the Ore Mountains. They form a cross-border cultural landscape that is unique in Europe and for which the Ore Mountains/Krušnohoří Coal and Steel Region was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage title in July 2019.
Idyllic landscapes, unique river valleys and picturesque villages along the German-Czech border have their origins in the more than 800-year mining history to which the Ore Mountains owe their wealth, name and economic importance. Even today, the history of mining can still be experienced in a comprehensible way - whether on a hike past tunnel mouth holes or heaps of heaps, on a stroll through the mining towns or on a visit to the treasure chambers underground.

Witnesses to the various mining epochs are strung along the Saxon-Bohemian SILVER ROAD like pearls on a string; it is considered the longest holiday route in Saxony. On about 275 kilometres between Zwickau and Dresden, as well as on secondary routes and across the border to the Czech Republic, the old trade route impressively shows what everyday life must have been like back then. The holiday route tells the story of the shiny metal that so shaped this region.
The historic mining towns with their magnificent hall churches, such as Freiberg Cathedral, St. Anne's Church in Annaberg-Buchholz and St. Wolfgang's Church in Schneeberg, are among the most important cultural monuments in Germany.
Mills, copper hammers, Adam Ries' first school of arithmetic and Silbermann organs are just a few of the attractions awaiting inquisitive visitors to the Erzgebirge.
Mining set the pace for a very long time. From it developed the Christmas tradition and the craftsmanship of the Ore Mountains as well as customs and traditions that are still alive today and can be experienced most intensively during Advent.
