The circular route “Dino Tour” leads from the Cretaceous period a hundred million years ago through the early Middle Ages to the Romantic era. On 30 kilometers through the natural landscape by the Steinhuder Meer and in the Rehburg Mountains, cyclists will encounter life-size dinosaur models, real dinosaur tracks and lots of interesting information about the prehistoric reptiles that once lived here at eight adventure stations. Leaflets for this and other tours, GPS data and further information can be found at www.rehburg-loccum.de.
Germany's largest scientific adventure and theme park has been created where over 300 prehistoric dinosaur tracks have been discovered. In the Münchehagen Dinosaur Park, visitors can see models that are true to the original, including Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Brachiosaurus and, of course, Tyrannosaurus Rex. The natural monument “dinosaur tracks” and the preparation workshop make the archeology exciting and vivid.
As a stop on the German Fairy Tale Route, Rehburg-Loccum also reminds us of the romantic era, when the Brothers Grimm traveled between Hanau, Loccum and Buxtehude to write down fairy tales and legends. Clear indications of this can be seen in the Rehburg mountains and in the former spa park on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale trail. Wooden figures tell of the frog prince and Sterntaler, of the Rehburg fountain or of the chicken that wanted to go to Loccum.
In the 18th century, Bad Rehburg was known as the “Madeira of the North” because the Hanoverian royal family brought the health resort into fashion. The “Historischen Promenaden Romantik Bad Rehburg” testify to this: curved paths, babbling watercourses and artificial rocks conveyed different landscape impressions. After a deep sleep, four kilometers of promenades with resting places, visual axes and wonderful views of the Steinhuder Meer were restored.
Loccum Monastery from the 12th century is famous for its late Romanesque buildings and is considered to be one of the best-preserved Cistercian monasteries north of the Alps. Today it offers concerts, guided tours and a famous library. Beautiful hiking trails lead through the monastery forest and the pond landscape, to the Jakobsquelle, to "Paradise" or on a historical pilgrimage route to Volkenroda in Thuringia.
