Stiftung Warentest compares insurance for motor homes

Finding affordable insurance for motorhomes is not easy. Comparing tariffs can also be cumbersome. Stiftung Warentest has examined which offers are available for liability, partial or comprehensive insurance and which rates are favourable.

Although the insurance of a motor home basically works like that of a car. However, comparing the offers is much more difficult because it is often not possible to query them via the corresponding portals. The premiums for comparable tariffs vary greatly. In an example chosen by Stiftung Warentest, the most expensive insurance policy for the same motor home was three times as expensive as the cheapest. The type of motor home - vans, alcoves or partially integrated -, on the other hand, is less decisive for the amount of the premium. Only the fully integrated systems stand out because they generally have a higher list price than other designs. In addition, glass damage is particularly costly here, as its windscreens do not correspond to the standard models. With very expensive integrations, providers may even refuse insurance.

Attention to the insurance conditions The policies for motor homes differ in some important respects from the insurance policies for cars.

Specifically, Stiftung Warentest recommends paying attention to the following tariff details:

Reimbursement

For a long time, not all rates will refund the purchase price in the first 12 or even 24 months if you had a total loss with your motorhome or it was stolen. There is also no classification into different type classes, as with passenger cars. And: For some damages, some contracts provide less than for cars. Stiftung Warentest recommends a new value refund for at least 12 months.

Animal Bite

The same applies here. Damage caused by martens or other animals is not included in some rates. This applies especially to consequential damage if you do not notice the bite in good time and there is a motor damage. Subsequent problems are usually only insured up to 3,000 euros or 5,000 euros - if at all. For this reason Stiftung Warentest explicitly recommends the co-insurance of consequential damages, which obviously significantly reduces the number of tariffs offered.

Glass damage

Caravans have more glass surfaces, resulting in more and more expensive damage than cars. It is possible that a tariff limits the coverage for this; you should pay attention to this.

What else is important

In the case of liability according to price, motor vehicle liability is legally required.

Therefore, the services are almost identical in all tariffs. You can therefore go by price. However, it is important to keep the limit as high as possible. There is often a flat rate of up to 100 million euros for a few euros surcharge, and up to 12 million euros for personal injury.

Pay attention to hail damage in the partial insurance. The price for the comprehensive insurance depends primarily on the value of the motor home.

The partial insurance fund pays in the event of theft, glass breakage, fire, storm and flooding. In the case of hail, one of the most common damages in residential buildings, a higher deductible applies in some cases. If the vehicle has a glass fibre roof, some tariffs are cheaper as the material is less susceptible to hail damage than sheet metal.

Comprehensive insurance difficult for very expensive motor

homes The comprehensive insurance includes a partial cover and also pays the damage to the motor home if the driver is responsible for an accident. It is also responsible for damage caused by vandalism. In expensive vehicles, obtaining full coverage can sometimes be difficult. Some providers look very closely at a new price of around 75,000 euros and refuse to conclude a contract.
