On the 130 kilometer long Nibelungensteig, hikers can explore the Odenwald in Siegfried's footsteps and find the source where the legendary hero is said to have come to his tragic end. The tour leads up and downhill from Zwingenberg an der Bergstrasse to Freudenberg am Main. The interplay of wooded peaks and ramified valleys is just as fascinating as the wonderful views, the rocky seas and castles. In addition to the main route, hikers can choose a 28-kilometer variant that runs from Hüttenthal to Erbach before returning to the main trail.
The Alemannenweg is a true panorama trail and offers hikers the opportunity to get to know the most beautiful places and the most varied landscapes in the Odenwald and along the mountain road. From the royal seat of Erbach you can get to the pretty half-timbered town of Michelstadt in seven stages. Auerbach Castle, the Fürstenlager State Park, the Renaissance Lichtenberg Castle and Frankenstein Castle are just a few of the cultural and historical sights that can be discovered.
The Heidelberg Castle, the romantic Strahlenburg, the Wachenburg and much more: The name does not promise too much, because on the Burgensteig Bergstraße there are more than 30 castles and palaces to explore. The 120-kilometer route takes you from Darmstadt to Heidelberg. The partly narrow and rustic paths cross streams, meadows, forests and vineyards. The path offers beautiful resting and viewing points with a fantastic view of the Odenwald and the Rhine plain.
Escape the hectic pace of everyday life step by step and immerse yourself in a wonderful natural and cultural landscape: this is what hikers can do on the Neckarsteig (www.neckarsteig.de), which takes them 127 kilometers from Heidelberg to Bad Wimpfen. The many castles and ruins that line the river like pearls of medieval architectural monuments, such as Neckarsteinach, Hirschhorn Castle and the Stolzeneck ruins near Neunkirchen, are impressive. Bad Rappenau or the Dilsberg mountain fortress are worth exploring, as are the picturesque old towns of Eberbach, Gundelsheim and Mosbach.
