GERMAN-FRENCH VACATION ROAD

Green Road/Route Verte

The Green Road has three regions in two countries and offers travellers thematic attractions that are endlessly appleaing: wine-growing in Alsace and Baden, the region's culinary "stars" and "stars" on both sides of the Rhine and the landscape beauties and differences. In addition, there is the rich cultural heritage that unfolds to the left and right of Green Street: medieval streets in picturesque old towns, museums of international standing and traces of Roman times. The history of the millennia can be felt and experienced here on a path across borders. The Green Road is a magical touristic link that connects three regions: the Vosges, the Rhine plain and the Black Forest.

Nations once at war

The bridge from France to Germany is being built on the Green Road between Neuf-Brisach and Breisach. Where the dividing line once ran between two warring nations, the idea of a united Europe has long since become part of everyday life. Freiburg with its Gothic cathedral and the charm of the "Bächle" and "Gässle" is the next stop on the Grünen Strasse before continuing via Kirchzarten and the open, inviting Dreisamtal into the Black Forest with the stations Hinterzarten, Titisee-Neustadt and Löffingen.

German-French friendship

When the then Lord Mayor of Colmar, Joseph Rey, initiated the road together with his colleague Joseph Bueb from Breisach in 1960, he did not only want to give tourism in the region a positive impetus. Rather, he wanted to create a testimony to Franco-German friendship. To this day, the Green Street is an expression of the lived Franco-German friendship. Founded the year after the Elysée Treaty was signed, the Green Road can rightly be interpreted as the perfect implementation of a policy of reconciliation and European unity.

Breisach on the Rhine

The mountain on which Breisach is located was located directly on the Rhine during floods until the Rhine was corrected in the early 19th century. The Romanesque St. Stephen's Cathedral from the 12th century rises above the old town on the Burgberg.

The Museum of City History in the Rheintor, one of the most beautiful baroque fortress gates still in existence in Europe (built by Jacques Tarade around 1678) shows a sophisticated collection of exhibits, documents and pictures of the city from the Stone Age to the present on an area of 400 square meters.

The Breisach Youth Hostel is also a Franco-German school meeting place for German and French school classes who can meet here for joint projects.

Freiburg im Breisgau

Anyone who has discovered Freiburg once will love to come back. More than 3 million visitors a year are enthusiastic about the city and its carefree way of life. In the center of the city is the world-famous cathedral with its 116 m high tower, which can also be climbed - only for those with a head for heights. In addition to the cathedral, the historic department store, the Alte Wache and the medieval city gates survived the last days of the war largely unscathed. The picturesque "Gässle" and the many "Bächle" in the city make up the charm of the old town. However, Freiburg is also known for its modern urban planning. The Rieselfeld is a model for many other cities.

There are wonderful bars in the city, from student bars to star restaurants, where you can enjoy the specialties of the region. Not far from the city limits, many winegrowers have broom or ostrich taverns where you can try the self-produced wine with delicious dishes. The opening times vary according to the season.

Freiburg also offers numerous museums and theaters, as well as concerts and many other events that make a visit worthwhile.

Donaueschingen

The historical importance of the Danube spring in Donaueschingen is proven by numerous historical sources that go back to Roman antiquity. The oldest evidence refers to the year 15 BC, when the Roman general and later emperor Tiberius rode north from Lake Constance and found the sources of the Danube there "after a day's journey".

Due to the fascination that emanates from this place, visitors from near and far have always come to see the origin of one of the largest rivers in Europe, which is located in the castle park between the town church of Sankt Johann and the Princely Fürstenberg Castle.

There are some nice caravanning parks in the area .
