Natural panorama

Regardless of which type of transportation you choose, the low mountain ranges with their hilly topography are an Eldorado for mobile homes, motorcyclists, cyclists and, of course, hikers, and they always impress with panoramic views, for example from the tower of the Ginsburg or from the Kindelsberg take a look: Here you are very close to nature!

This offers a varied backdrop for cozy villages full of charm and cities with historic city centers. Romantic brooks and the upper reaches of the rivers Eder, Lahn and Sieg meander through enchanting valleys, here and there towered over by beautiful castles and fortresses.

The Siegen-Wittgenstein Route makes it possible to experience:

  • the most densely wooded district in Germany with the headwaters and upper reaches of the Eder, Lahn and Sieg rivers in the Sauerland Rothaargebirge Nature Park;
  • sites of industrial culture in one of Europe's oldest industrial regions, the Siegerland;
  • the largest contiguous forest area in Germany in the Wittgensteiner Bergland;
  • encounters with the king of the forests in the "Wisent-Wilderness on the Rothaarsteig";
  • magnificent views and distant vistas from the heights and fascinating glimpses into magnificent valleys, some of which are still close to nature;
  • the old town of Freudenberg, the so-called "Alte Flecken", with its historic half-timbered houses recognised as an international architectural monument and known far beyond the borders of the region.

Exploration tours

Speaking of exploratory tours: Twelve "Hiking Highlights to the Left and Right of the Rothaarsteig" are an attractive addition to the well-known long-distance hiking trail. For day trippers, three so-called "Rothaarsteig trails" in premium quality also lead to local highlights.

And all this in a landscape that has become the new home of the king of the forests. The " Wisent-Wilderness on the Rothaarsteig" near Bad Berleburg is the peephole into a species conservation project that is unique in Western Europe: the reintroduction of free-ranging wisents in the Rothaar Mountains. However, since the animals, which are threatened with extinction, generally elude the gaze of hikers in the extensive forests, the "Wisent Wilderness on the Rothaarsteig" was created. A second herd lives there in an area of around 20 hectares that is largely left in its natural state.

Wanna bet that your round trip through Siegen-Wittgenstein will take a little longer than expected?

Wanderlust

Listen to the rustling of the leaves. Breathe in the spicy scent of the Siegen-Wittgenstein forests. Let the wind blow around your nose and let your gaze wander: into the Lahn valley, onto the Ederschleifen, over green hilly country. Bubbling springs and quiet waters, weathered veteran trees, half-timbered houses, tunnel entrances and traces of slate mining line the paths. Passing small hamlets, you follow wagon tracks driven into the rock along old trade routes. Hike along the Rothaarsteig trail or find your own way between Celtic ramparts, enchanted mushroom territories and mystical rocks.
